Choosing Safe Footwear for the Elderly

It has been said by health professions that the Elderly are more likely to fall with poorly fitting shoes.

The soles of your feet have nerves that help us judge the position of our bodies, in order to work properly your feet need to be touching the ground and shoes need to be safely on your feet when walking. Falls can occur from the use of poorly fitting shoes and slippers or wearing no shoes or slippers or backless, floppy footwear.

It is advisable for elderly people to wear sensible, low heeled shoes and slippers that fit well and give plenty of support. A non slip sole is also a good idea as smooth soles can easily slip on waxed or polished floors. When the shoes or slippers are taken off there should be no markings on the feet.
